Introduction

Since our inception in 2007 AMEE has always strived to make environmental data transparent and easily accessible

In 2012 we decided enough was enough, it was becoming clear that something had to be done about the lack of transparent environmental data available on businesses. So we created a freely accessible public directory of all registered UK businesses where companies can report their environmental data.

We recognised something different was needed to push companies to be open about their environmental performance so the idea for the AMEEScore was born. Our hypothesis was that by publicly rating companies, represented by a 1 - 100 score, we could engage those for whom sustainability had never been a core business focus.

To create the AMEEScore we needed to acquire vast amounts of data from both the financial and environmental sides of the UK’s business landscape

Our data collection includes utility spend, reported emissions and business metrics like annual revenue

Methodology

The AMEEScore is a business efficiency metric that rates environmental impact in terms of annual carbon emissions relative to revenue, expressed as a 1-100 score. It helps enable direct comparison of the efficiency of companies within the same industry

Using AMEE’s unique access to utility spend data for 400,000 companies as well as publicly reported environmental data

We can model emissions for each company by using Defra Conversion factors turning utility spend into a figure for tCO2e

After grouping companies by revenue and industry, we divide Emissions/Revenue to calculate each company’s AMEEScore

AMEEScores are comparable within the same industry, regardless of differences in company size thanks to the use of different models depending on total annual revenue
